Swain County’s pool was recoined Deep Creek Waterpark within the past year, and when it reopens for the season Memorial Day Weekend, it will be with much welcome upgrades.

Construction is finishing up now on two new meeting rooms, updated bathrooms, a lifeguard room, and a new pump and storage room. In addition, there will be a concession stand.

“We will be selling concessions daily during pool hours,” said Recreation Department Supervisor Taylor Woodard. On sale will be drinks, snacks and ice cream. No hot food will be prepared at this time.

While the concession stand is sure to be a hit among children, the next upgrade will likely be more so— a new water slide, but people will have to wait until at least mid-June for this new attraction.

“It all depends on when the surge tank comes in,” Woodard said. She explained the surge tank catches the water from the basin at the end of the slide and feeds it back to the top.

“We’re also doing renovations to the baby pool,” she said.

The splash pad that hasn’t operated properly in years is coming out with an expanded deck area at the baby pool for now.

“Later on down the road, we hope to put something back for them; it’s not in the budget now,” she said.

A lazy river is also in the works for a future season.

The new meeting rooms will be reservable for activities like birthday parties, conferences and other get togethers.

Family night

Families are invited to make a night of it on Monday nights through the summer, joining the recreation park for Family Night at the pool. Many nights, they will show movies on the water, and the entrance fee is discounted.

Senior Games

The recreation department just wrapped up the local Senior Games with a closing banquet this past Friday with 11 participants heading to the state competition. This was the first year the county had its own games since 2007.

“It was great. I’m glad we got to do it this year, and I hope we have more participants next year so we can keep growing it,” Woodard said of the games. “It was a lot of fun.”

The department is continuing its other youth activities with youth flag football beginning soon and T-ball underway. The summer camp will be June 10, with registration currently open and 18 field trips already planned.

Sponsorships

As the county continues to work to grow its recreation offerings, it is also looking for sponsorships for its facilities and programs.
