Obituaries

Roy “Jr.” T. Rackley, 75, of Whittier went home to be with his Lord on Friday, July 29, 2016. A native of Pickens County, (Easley) South Carolina, he retired from Alice Manufacturing Company. He attended Ela Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Mellie Scruggs Rackley; Helen Bryant Rackley, the mother of his son; and two sisters, Velma Patterson and Ruby Duncan.

Bruce C. Messer, 73, of Bryson City has went home to be with the Lord on Friday, July 29, 2016. He was a lifetime resident of Bryson City. He was preceded in death by his parents, Beauford and Effie Messer and his son, David Messer.

Bobby L. Amburn, 80, of Bryson City, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 31, 2016, surrounded by his family. He passed away peacefully following an extended illness. Bobby was born at Proctor, North Carolina on September 22, 1935, to the late Cargus and Ella Mae Amburn.

Bobby worked as a custodian for Swain County Schools for thirty years. He was a faithful employee who took great pride in his work and was dedicated to helping those around him.

“Pops” Cecil Ray Franklin died peacefully in Charles George VA Medical Center on July 23, 2016 in Asheville, NC at the age of 68.

Mary Ellen Childers passed away in hospice care on July 30, 2016.  She was 84 years old.  She and her beloved puppy, Baby, have been living with her daughter and son-in-law in Stokesdale, NC, for almost 4 years. 

Leon Queen, 73, of the Alarka Community went home to be with the Lord on Monday, July 18, 2016. A native of Swain County, he was raised by his grandparents, “Stump” and Minnie Smith of Old #4 Rd. on the Qualla Boundary. He was an enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and an active member of Mt. Vernon Freewill Baptist Church.

Dottie Joy Crisp, 58, of Bryson City, formerly of Stecoah, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday July 20, 2016 at her residence. A native of Graham County she was the daughter of the late Harvey and Faye Crisp. She attended Victory Baptist Church.

She is survived by one brother and two sisters, four nieces, four great nieces, and five great nephews, to whom she was Nana D.

Services were held Sunday, July 24th at Victory Baptist Church with a memorial table at 2:30 and service followed at 3:00 PM.

Eva Jenkins Styles, 95, of Bryson City, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday July 21st, 2016. She passed away peacefully at her home after an extended illness. Born in Swain County on April 16th, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Wesley Jenkins and Mellie Lane Jenkins. Eva loved quilting, reading, gardening, going camping and fishing, but most of all she loved spending time with all her grandkids.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Styles, 4 brothers, 3 sisters and 3 of her children; Jean Cline, Bell Norwood and Ray Styles.

Sue Crisp, 81, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, July 16, 2016. A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of the late Tom Cook and Julia Fields, and wife of the late Charles L. Crisp. In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Lee.

Suzanne Davis Bunn, aged 82, passed away at Cypress Glen Retirement Community in Greenville, North Carolina on July 19, 2016 after a long illness. 

Larry York, 64, of the Alarka community was called home to meet his Heavenly Father peacefully Sunday, July 10, 2016 in a Jackson County healthcare facility. A native of Swain County, he was the son of Lorraine Bowers Keepfer of Bryson City and the late Leslie York.

Carolyn Slagle Lindsay, 74, of the Lauada Community, went to be with her husband Robert Lindsay who was a Purple Heart recipient for the Vietnam War; her son Robbie; her parents Nelson and Dess Byrd Slagle, and a sister Elizabeth Slagle Morris.

She is survived by two sisters, Laura E. Holden of Bryson City and Catherine Wiggins and husband Earl of Asheville, NC; one half-brother, Clinton Slagle of the Ela Community, and many loving nieces and nephews.

Services for Mrs. Betty Singletary of Bryson City, NC formerly of Thomasville were held Saturday, July 9, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. at Whiddon-Shiver Funeral Home with interment following at Laurel Hill Cemetery. The family received friends from 11:00 a.m. until noon at the funeral home before the service.

Eural Rollins, 88, of the Stecoah Community went home to be with the Lord Thursday June 30, 2016 at his residence. A native of Hartford, Tennessee he was the son of the late Isaac and Bertie James Rollins and husband of the late Opal Cable Rollins.

He was preceded in death by one son Rocky Rollins; three sisters; Janie Crisp, Viola Cobb, and Becky Spurling; and four brothers Roy, J.C., Jack, and Charlie Rollins.

He is survived by a son; Larry Rollins, a step-daughter Brenda Dowdle, eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and a lot of nieces and nephews.

Jerry E. Corbin, age 76, of Greenville, Michigan passed away late Friday evening, June 24, 2016 at his daughter’s home under the loving care of his family and Hospice of Michigan.  Jerry had resided in Greenville, Michigan for the last four months. Prior to that, Jerry enjoyed his retirement in Franklin, North Carolina where he was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church and the community.
