Lorraine J. Crittenden, 70, of Cullowhee went home to be with the Lord and her mother Thursday, February 9, 2017. A native of Bryson City, she was the daughter of the late Wilbert and Bertha Coleman Jones. She was a member of the Women’s VFW Auxiliary of Bryson City, the First Baptist Church of Spartanburg, a lifelong member of Morningstar Baptist Church of Bryson City, and the NAACP.

Jim Bo Bingham, 69, of Sylva, passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at his home surrounded by his friends and family. 

A native of Jackson County he was the son of the late Luther and Charlotte Jenkins Bingham. He was a member of Long Branch Baptist Church but attended Old Savannah Baptist Church. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing.  What he enjoyed most was spending time with his family and friends. 

In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his brother George Whitaker.

Jerry Newlon, of Whittier, NC went on the ultimate fishing trip with our Lord Jesus Christ on Thursday, February 2, 2017.

Mr. Newlon is survived by his wife, two married children, three grandchildren, one great grandchild, his sister, and five nieces and nephews.

Jerry loved the lord, his family, this country, and fishing.

Mr. Newlon sacrificed much for his family, his wife repeatedly, and his country, serving in the U.S. Navy then U. S. Air Force until he retired. He also retired from Duke Energy.

Katherine Murphy Crisp, 79, of the Birdtown Community went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, January 25, 2017. 

A native of Cherokee, she was the daughter of the late Elnora and Luther Murphy and wife of the late Theron Crisp. 

She was a founding member of Bethabara Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir for many years. She helped in the founding and worked for the Head Start Program for 35 years where she started several day cares and taught many children throughout those years.

Cooper Reed McClung, infant son of Colton and Emily Cook McClung of Bryson City, passed away early Thursday, January 26, 2017 at Angel Medical Center in Franklin, NC.

He was preceded in death by his paternal great grandmother, Barbara Phillips McClung and his maternal great grandfathers, Gordon Cook and Don McCoy.

Johnny Michael Frady, 52, of Bryson City, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, January 28, 2017. 

A native of Haywood County and longtime resident of Swain County, he was the son of Ray and Nellie Dyer Frady of Bryson City, and husband of Julie Wade Frady of Bryson City.

He was a member of Cold Springs Baptist Church.

John Calloway, 66 years of age,  went to  be with the Lord on January 22, 2017. He was a  beloved brother and friend. 

He was  preceded in death by his parents Elmore and Bertha Calloway. 

Surviving family members include four sisters Alice Presnell of the home, Rosalee Wilson, Ruby Jolley and Susie Calloway; two brothers JD Calloway and Jack Calloway; and his beloved dog Buddy. 

He will be laid to rest at Elk Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery in Newland, North Carolina beside his Mother and Father at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 26. 

Donald Lee Largent of Deltona, Florida entered into his heavenly garden from his home in Bryson City, NC on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2017.

He was preceded in death by his parents Donald A. Largent and Margie Largent.  

He is survived by his wife Maxine DeHart Largent, a son Christopher Largent and grandson Levi of Sanford, FL. Step daughter  Joule Lowman (Travis) of Charlotte, NC. Sisters Sherry L. Schuring and Minnie L. King of Pueblo, CO. 

Jay Stephenson, 83, of Bryson City passed away Friday, January 20, 2017. A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Frank and Lillian Stillwell Stephenson. He was a U.S. Army Veteran having served in the Korean War.

 He is survived by his sister, Marilyn Stephenson; and several cousins.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home. Burial was in the Lauada Cemetery.

The family received friends from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Georgia McGraw Snyder, 83, of Bryson City, NC went home to be with the Lord, Saturday January 21, 2017 at Mountain View Manor in Bryson City, NC.

She was one of 15 children born to the late Jake and Deliah Shover McGraw. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her grandsons Jeremy and Isaac Jenkins and nine of her brothers and sisters.

Marymae Lindsey, 87, of Bryson City, NC went home to be with the Lord Thursday, January 19, 2017.

Born in Westminster, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late John Melvin Hopkinson and Anna Berdolia Viola (Beegle) Hopkinson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lawson Lindsey; son, Roscoe Lindsey; brothers, Johnmurray and Melvin Hopkinson.

Marymae retired from Swain County Hospital and has also worked at Fryemont Inn and the Sleep Inn in Bryson City.

Max Wayland Monteith Sr., 83 of Forney Creek, NC passed away peacefully in his sleep while at home with his wife of 63 years, January 18th 2017.

He was preceded in passing by his father John Arthur Monteith Sr., mother Mary Gunter Monteith, sisters Beatrice Douthit, and Gwendolyn DeHart. He is survived by his brothers John Arthur (Buddy) Monteith Jr. and David Patrick Monteith, wife Carmaleta Littlejohn Monteith, children Max Wayland Monteith Jr. and Tracy Evans Monteith, his grandsons Andrew Evans Monteith and Clayton Jackson Monteith.

Lucille Eslinger Conner, 87, passed away on Sunday, January 22, 2017. 

She was born in Gaston County, daughter of the late Creed and Hattie Sparks Eslinger.  

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years Clone Conner; and two children Jack Conner and Richard Conner. She was a member of Antioch Baptist church in Bryson City, NC. She retired from Knit Products in Belmont.

Katherine Trudy Walker, age 80, of Meherrin, Virginia, passed away on January 22, 2017. She was born on June 26, 1936 in North Carolina to the late Johnny L. and Arzlea Barker O’Diear. 

She was married to her husband of 46 ½ years, Nathan W. Walker III. They moved to Farmville in August 1990 where she loved working her garden and mowing her grass; she loved to ride the lawn mower. She is remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and for making the best fried apple pies.

Patty Davison, 60, of Bryson City went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, January 18, 2017 after a courageous battle with cancer. A native of Monroeville, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late James and Geneva Payne Givens. She was a caregiver for 35 years and retired from The Hermitage in Sylva, North Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her special friend and father of her children, Charles Wandell.
