Aldena “Deanie” Cook, 76, of the Kirklands Creek community went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, December 28, 2016. A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of the late Lawson and Florence Duncan Stevenson. She was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her son, Darryl James and her brothers and sisters, Ralph Stevenson, Ruby Buchanan, Tommy and Donald Stevenson.

James Earl McLean, 61, of the Deep Creek Community, lost his battle with cancer, Thursday, December 29, 2016. A native of Swain County he was the son of Beulah Sutton McLean of Bryson City and the late E.J. McLean. In addition to his father he was also preceded in death by one sister Kay McLean; one uncle, Kenneth McLean; grandparents, Earnest and Faye McLean; one aunt, Rosie Stepp; and grandparents, Oscar and Dorothy Owle. 

Kenneth Cloer, 84, of the Alarka Community, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, December 21, 2016. A native of Swain County he was the son of the late Alfred David and Hester Woodard Cloer. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by one brother, Carroll Cloer.

Helen Marie Crisp, 80, of the Shoal Creek Community, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, December 26, 2016. A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of the late Herman Martin and Iowa Franckewitz. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by one brother Ricky Franckewitz.

Helen is survived by her husband of 26 years, Bennett Crisp; two sons Dee Alexander Crisp, and Charles Randy Hughes; one daughter, Pamela Bowers; two grandchildren, and two great grandchildren; one brother Michael Franckewitz, and two sisters Judy Murphy and Vickie Franckewitz.

Mrs. Eloise Nelson, age 101, of Barnesville, formerly of Bryson City, North Carolina passed away Thursday, December 22, 2016, at Sunny Grove Assisted Living in Barnesville, Georgia. She was born May 30, 1915 in Graham, North Carolina, daughter of the late John and Trudie Morgan Connor. She was a member of Ela Baptist Church in the Swain Community of Bryson City, and she retired from State of North Carolina.  

Dalphene Barker Wilson, 85, of Franklin, NC left this life for a better one with the Lord on December 20, 2016.  

A native of Swain County, Dalphene was born on November 3, 1931 to the late Walter James Cochran and Minnie Ledford Cochran.  

Also, preceding her in death is her first husband, Leslie G. Barker, Sr.; a daughter, Janice Weaver; six sisters, Hazel Simonds, Lexie Hampton, Ruby Russell, Faye Barker, Margaret Brendle, and Melinda Cochran; and, two brothers, Johnny Cochran and Paul Cochran; one grandson, Jeremy Barker; and, one great granddaughter, MyKala Cable.

Cecil “Cleve” Shepherd became our Shining Star in Heaven on December 18, 2016. “Cleve” was born in Swain County NC to William Coleman Shepherd and Ollie Maryjane Bowers Shepherd. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and 10 brothers and sisters.

Irene Hampton Smith, 78, of the Alarka Community, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday December 17, 2016. A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of the late Chester Hampton and Mary Hyde.

She was a member of the Whittier Church of God.

Mrs. Linda Hicks Jenkins, age 69, of Flowery Branch, Georgia passed away Sunday, December 18, 2016 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, surrounded by her family. 

Private services will be held at a later date. 

Mrs. Jenkins was born May 13, 1947 to the late Haskell & Loretta Hicks of the Alarka Community, North Carolina. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, who enjoyed quilting, gardening and cooking. 

Alan Vance Lindsay, 57, of Bryson City went home to be with the Lord Saturday, December 17, 2016 at his residence. A lifelong resident of Bryson City, he was the son of Zeb Vance and Roberta Howard Lindsay of Bryson City.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Donna Williamson of Bryson City, Robyn Morris and husband Jamie of Shelby; one brother, Daryl Lindsay and wife Tina of Shelby; one daughter, Stacey Lindsay; one grandson, Jayce; several nieces and nephews and a grand niece and nephew.

Lois L. Phillips (Arvey) born May 28, 1924 in Macon County, North Carolina, died on December 15, 2016 in Salem, Oregon.  Arrangements by North Santiam Funeral Services www.santiamfuneral.com.  Memorial service to be announced.

Billy Cole, age, 76, of Bryson City, NC passed away Thursday December 8, 2016. We are searching for a next of kin or any family that may be in the area. If you have any information, please call Swain County DSS, 828-488-6921.

Jerry Lee Kirkland, 57, of the Shepherds Creek Community went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, December 13, 2016. A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late John Paul and Clara Mae Simonds Kirkland. He worked for 41 years as a logger and was a member of Antioch Baptist Church on Coopers Creek.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Roy Vincent Kirkland and his sister, Jessie Mae Walker.

LANEXA - Richard O. Cochran MAJ US Army (Ret). On December 7, 2016, after many brave years of fighting, Dick won his final battle and found eternal peace. 

He was born on February 3, 1942, to Leona and Dock Cochran in Bryson City, North Carolina. Dick entered the United States Army in 1961 and faithfully served for 20 years with two tours in Vietnam. While in the army, he earned a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in Business Administration. Upon his retirement, he served as a project manager with Northrop Grumman for 23 years at Fort Eustis, Virginia. 

Tommie Gene Brown, 80, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, December 10, 2016.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, December 13, 2016 in Bell Hill Baptist Church. 

The family received friends from 6-8 Monday evening at the Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy where the body was until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services.
