Betty Jean (Honeycutt) Feamster, 77, of Tuckasegee died Saturday, August 27, 2016.

The funeral will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 3 at Appalachian Funeral Services chapel, 165 Skyland Dr., Sylva, NC with Rev. Jeff Powell officiating.  The family will receive friends one hour  prior to the service at the funeral home.  A private family burial service will be conducted in Tuckasegee.

Lyle Edwards, born January 27, 1934 to the late Cora Lee Bowers and Marion Edwards went home to his Lord and Savior on August 25, 2016.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Gwen Thomas and Betty Jean Earls and his son, Billy Edwards; and his stepfather, Bobby Bowers; three brothers, Bill E., Nelson J., Keith B. and one sister, Alda M.

He is survived by his brother, Arvile Bowers; and two sisters, Helen Woodard (Wade) and Judith Parris (Eual Ray).

Alta Downs, 77, of Bryson City passed away Saturday, August 27, 2016 at her residence.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Dolly Parris Jenkins; two children, Dennis Downs and Vicky Beck; great grandchild, Mason Todd West; and her brother, Garl Jenkins.

Vincent Virgil Thomasson, 83, of Bryson City passed away Saturday, August 27, 2016 at his residence. A native of West Virginia, he was the son of the late Harvey Thomasson and Bertha Bumgarner and husband of the late Olive Jane Thomasson. He was a US Army Veteran having served in the Korean War.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Ray Thomasson and his sisters, Thelma Wiggins and Wilma Sedleck.

James Colin Jenkins, 63, of Bear Cove Circle, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, August 18, 2016. A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Robert Glenn and Delthia Lequire Jenkins. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a sister Gerene Messer.

He was a member of Franklin Grove Baptist Church. Colin was a Jouneyman Diesel Mechanic with Continental Trail Ways in Charlotte, NC for 12 years, and then worked for the Swain County School system as a Transportation Supervisor until his retirement in 2013.

Donna Cummings, 67, of Bryson City, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, August 18, 2016. A native of Orange County, NY and longtime resident of Swain County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Mable Benfield Cummings, and wife of the late Richard Conrad Oldenquist.

She is survived by one son, Richard Oldenquist of Bryson City; one sister Judy Cummings of Bryson City; one brother Robert Cummings of Hollis, NH; one niece Leah and a nephew Lucas.

No services are planned at this time.

Zell Cookston, 87, of Bryson City and former resident of Hildebran, NC went home to be with the Lord Saturday, August 20, 2016. A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Sam and Beulah Forrester Cookston. He was a US Navy Veteran.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Candler and Cromwell Cookston; sisters, Maggie Bell Slocum, Evelyn Swain and Tiny Smith; and his sons, Danny and Daryl Cookston.

Jimmie Nell Seay, age 86, died Saturday, August 20th, in Birmingham, Alabama of a heart attack.  Mrs. Seay was born in Sipsey, Alabama to parents James and Cora Fields.  She was a retired elementary school teacher who held degrees in Early Childhood Education and Child Psychology.  

She married Ralph Vincent Seay of Bryson City in 1959.  They resided in Bryson for a number of years where she was active in the Garden Club and Swain County High School which her children attended.  

Ruth Jane Greene Burnette, 93, of the Alarka Community went home to be with the Lord, Friday, August 12, 2016, at her residence. A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of the late William Ezekiel and Eva Cochran Greene and wife of the late Rev. Jay Burnette. In addition to her husband and parents she was also preceded in death by one sister, Hazel Brendle.

Betty Jill Whitt, 73, of Whittier, NC, died Tuesday, 08/09/2016. A memorial will be held at a later date. 

Born 10/7/1942 in Coral Gables, Florida, she was preceded in death by her mother Betty Brown.

Whitt was an owner of Timberlake Campground in Whittier.  She had a multitude of hobbies. Her main focus was horses and gained the respect of some of the most talented trainers in the industry.

She is survived by a son, Joseph E. Sloan and two grandchildren. 

Appalachian Funeral Services and Crematorium of Sylva is in charge of the service. 

Roy “Jr.” T. Rackley, 75, of Whittier went home to be with his Lord on Friday, July 29, 2016. A native of Pickens County, (Easley) South Carolina, he retired from Alice Manufacturing Company. He attended Ela Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Mellie Scruggs Rackley; Helen Bryant Rackley, the mother of his son; and two sisters, Velma Patterson and Ruby Duncan.

Bruce C. Messer, 73, of Bryson City has went home to be with the Lord on Friday, July 29, 2016. He was a lifetime resident of Bryson City. He was preceded in death by his parents, Beauford and Effie Messer and his son, David Messer.

Bobby L. Amburn, 80, of Bryson City, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 31, 2016, surrounded by his family. He passed away peacefully following an extended illness. Bobby was born at Proctor, North Carolina on September 22, 1935, to the late Cargus and Ella Mae Amburn.

Bobby worked as a custodian for Swain County Schools for thirty years. He was a faithful employee who took great pride in his work and was dedicated to helping those around him.

“Pops” Cecil Ray Franklin died peacefully in Charles George VA Medical Center on July 23, 2016 in Asheville, NC at the age of 68.

Mary Ellen Childers passed away in hospice care on July 30, 2016.  She was 84 years old.  She and her beloved puppy, Baby, have been living with her daughter and son-in-law in Stokesdale, NC, for almost 4 years.
