On Tuesday, Swain County High School Maroon Devils basketball teams took on the Murphy Bulldogs at home for a conference game, their first meeting of the season for a real nail-biter.

Swain took an early lead in the beginning of the first quarter with 5-0, but Murphy came back tying the game at 7-7 with just over three minutes left on the clock. Back and forth baskets led to another tie at 9-9. In the next few seconds, Murphy took the 14-9 lead but a basket from Josiah Glaspie, brought the Devils up two points ending the first quarter with 14-12 and the Bulldogs still in the lead.

The second quarter brought back and forth baskets as both teams battled it out and tied the game at 16-16.

Murphy got their 10th foul of the game, and Aiden Southards took two throws that were good followed by two technical shot attempts by Reese Winchester.

The Maroon Devils went into halftime with a one point lead of 27-26.

In the third quarter both teams tied it up again at 28-28 before Swain took a five point lead with 33-28 making their seventh score of the period compared to Murphy’s one.

The lead didn’t last long as Murphy clawed their way back to tie the game at 33-33 going into the fourth quarter. Murphy took a two point lead, and a block by Nathan Bogdanowicz got the ball back for the Devils which they turned into a basket, bringing the score to 35-35.

Back and forth scoring followed with Murphy getting enough of a lead to finish the game for a three point loss for the Devils of 46-43.
